Draw free body diagrams for the motorcycle rider for each of the following situations. Label all your force vectors clearly, and draw them in a self-consistent manner – that is, forces that cancel (sum to zero) should be drawn so that they cancel on your diagram. In all diagrams, assume the motion is towards the right. A motorcycle rider falls off her Harley while attempting to pop a wheelie.

  1. The motorcycle rider skids along the surface of a horizontal road, slowing down slightly in the process.
  2. The road dips, so the sliding motorcycle rider picks up speed as she skids along the asphalt.

The rider eventually slides to a stop. An ambulance arrives and two burly EMTs place the rider on a gurney

  1. The EMTs hoist the gurney straight upwards to get it level with the bed of the ambulance.
  2. With the motorcycle rider inside, the ambulance accelerates along the horizontal road towards the hospital.
  3. The ambulance drives towards the hospital along a straight, horizontal road at a steady 40 mph.

B. The rider is put in traction at the hospital. A force of 120 N at an angle of 29º from the vertical is applied to her femur. How much force should be applied to her tibia (at 70º from the vertical), so that the resultant net traction pull is directed at 23º from the vertical?
