in the hydrogen sulfide ion, SH^-, there is a single sigma-bond between hydrogen and Sulfur. considering the atomic orbital energies, which Sulfur atomic orbital does the hydrogen 1s orbital interact with in forming this bond? explain.
Sulfur with an,
3s2 3p4
electronic configuration, has two lone pairs of electrons.
When we form SH- ion, sulfur would have three lone pair of electrons on it which gives it a -ve charge.
The single bond formed between sulfur and hydrogen is between 3px and 1s orbitals of sulfur and hydrogen, respectively. The 3px orbital is of lower energy and thus the incoming hydrogen 1s orbital first overlaps with it to give a sigma bond between sulfur and hydrogen.
