EXERCISE 1.2-3

Sensation Aberration-Free Imaging Surface. Determine the equation of a convex spherical (nonspherical) surface between media of refractive indexes n1 and n2 such that all rays (not necessarily paraxial) from an axial point P1 at a distance z1 to the left of the surface area image onto an axial point P2 at a distance z2 to the right of the surface [Fig. 1.2-12(a)]. Hint: In accordance with Fermat's principle the optical pathlengths between the two points must be equal for all paths.

Describe the reduction in the spherical aberration for a plano-convex lens for the special case of collimated light (parallel light) focused down to a focal point. Which orientation of the lens gives the least spherical aberration and why? Show ray diagrams Describe how and axial-GRIN lens can further reduce the spherical aberration. Again show a qualitative ray diagram.
