In an ionic bond, (pick one).
two atoms both become strongly electronegative and attract each other. |
||
atoms attract each other by sharing electrons to fill their valence shells. |
||
atoms, having gained or lost electrons, attract one another with opposite charges. |
||
two atoms are attracted by partial positive and negative charges. |
Ionic bond = as the name tells it is the bond between ions.
Ion = an atom that has either gained or lose electron(s) from its outermost shell is called ion. It can be positive or negative.
The ions are bonded by the electrostatic attraction and in an ionic bond one species or atom must be positive and one negative. As per electrostatic attraction opposites attract while like repell. They are formed as a result of redox reaction in which oxidation and reduction occurs simultaneously.
Example ---- NaCl ---> Na+ and Cl-
So, accordingly the anwer of question in an ionic bond -- atoms, having gained or lost electrons , attract one another with opposite charges , Option C.
Other options are wrong as :
Option A --- 2 atoms both becomes strongly electronegative and attract each other. Wrong because no interaction occurs between 2 strongly electronegative species. To form bond one should be electronegative and one electropositive as one should be able to gain electron and one to accept electron.
Option B --- atoms attract each other by sharing electrons to fill their valence shells. In this interaction sharing is occurring means it is a covalent bond. In covalent bond sharing of electrons occurs between species to fill their valence shells.
Option D --- two atoms are attracted by partial positive and partial negative charges. The so occurs in hydrogen bonding.
So, correct answer Option C.
