Aldo and his brother Pablo have gone to skate to a frozen lagoon. At one point he stops to open his lunch, when he observes that Pablo is approaching directly towards him with a speed V0. Before the impact, Aldo throws his brother the lunch package in the horizontal direction which is caught by Pablo in the air. If both brothers have the same mass M and the mass of the package is m, calculate the minimum value of how quickly Aldo should throw the package so that his brother Pablo does not clash with him.

Solutions

Expert Solution

For Pablo to not clash with Aldo, the velocity of Pablo with respect to Aldo should be zero.

If Aldo throws the package horizontally towards Pablo with speed , the horizontal velocity of the package remains unchanged upto the time it is caught by Pablo because there is no force on the package in the horizontal direction until it is caught by Pablo.

After the package is caught by Pablo, the total mass of Pablo and the package is   .

Assuming Pablo is just gliding towards Aldo, i.e. Pablo is not applying any force to change his speed and there is no friction, we can use the fact that the total horizontal momentum of Pablo and the package should be conserved because there is no horizontal force on Pablo+Package system after the package has been thrown by Aldo.

The total horizontal momentum of Pablo and the  package before it is caught by Pablo is

Note that momenta of Pablo and the package, before it is caught by Pablo, have opposite direction because they are moving in opposite directions.

If is at least such that above total horizontal momentum is zero, then after catching the package Pablo will stop moving towards Aldo because we now have a combined system of mass whose momentum will be zero only if its velocity is zero.

So, we find that   is the minimum horizontal speed with which Aldo should throw the package towards Pablo. If Aldo throws the package with a horizontal speed greater than , the conservation of momentum implies that the combined system of mass , after Pablo catches the package, moves away from Aldo with speed such that

SCENARIO: Rachel and her family are enjoying a great home-cooked dinner. At one point Rachel's brother (who they weren't expecting) sneaks in and comes into the room tapping Rachel on the shoulder from behind and surprises everyone. Unfortunately for Rachel, she inhales a small piece of food (wrong tube situation). She struggles to breathe, gags, and coughs a few times, and eventually (nearly a minute has passed) dislodges the food and begins breathing normally again. Think about this scenario, there...

Yassein is looking to refinance his home because rates have gone down from when he bought his house 10 years ago. He started with a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage of $339,000 at an annual rate of 7.6%. He can now get a 20-year fixed-rate mortgage at an annual rate of 5.6% on the remaining balance of his initial mortgage. (All loans require monthly payments.) In order to re-finance, Yassein will need to pay closing costs of $4,200. These costs are out...

Calculate the EBDAT breakeven point for 2020 in terms of survival revenues for Jen and Larry’s Frozen Yogurt Company. How many cups of frozen yogurt would have to be sold to reach EBDAT breakeven?
Jen and Larry’s Frozen Yogurt Company     In 2019, Jennifer (Jen) Liu and Larry Mestas founded Jean and Larry’s Frozen Yogurt Company, which was based on the idea of applying the microbrew or microbatch strategy to the production and sale of frozen yogurt. Jen and Larry began producing small quantities of unique flavors and blends in limited editions. Revenues were $600,000 in 2019 and were estimated to be $1.2 million in 2020.     Because Jen and Larry were selling premium frozen yogurt...

Gary is an accounting major at a local college. At one point in his childhood, he was overweight. Other children teased him and called him “fatty hatty.” This made a deep impression on Gary, negatively effecting his self-esteem. In middle school, he felt isolated and was described as a “loner” by teachers. He did not join any clubs or engage in activities with peers. In high school, his physical education teacher encouraged Gary to join the wrestling team. He thought...
