Green and Green (2004) discuss changes in Canadian immigration policy.
1. How did the power to set immigration policy change in 1910? Name an advantage and a disadvantage.
2. How did immigration change in the 1930’s? Was the change based on a long-term view, or a short term view?
1) According to the immigration act of 1910 the government powers got enhanced to regulated the flow of imigrants. This act provided the governor in council and government in council to have sole authority to either deport od take the immigrants.
The main advantage is that this act will help the government to take neccesary actions on anti social elements who are in the form of immigrants and this act also provides that the immigrants who are allowed to settle can get citizenship after 3 years .
The main disadvantage of this act is that the middle persons who work for the government can misuse this act and exploit the immigrants in any way they want.
2) In 1930 Canada was hit by great depression which inturn lead to intolerances between the people and riots and violence broke out on immigrants where Canda government made strict laws that severly restricting the flow of imigrants which inturn lead to the steady decline in the immigrants from than onwards. Thus the main purpose of this act was done on short term view to decrease the flow immigrants during depression period.
