Intravenous Calculations
1. Directions: Determine the following in drops per minute using the drop factor provided.
Lactated Ringer solution is infusing at 45 microgtt/min. The drop factor is 60 gtt/mL. How much fluid volume will the client receive in 5 hr?
2. Directions: Determine the following in drops per minute using the drop factor provided.
D5 NS is infusing at 28 macrogtt/min. The drop factor is 10 gtt/mL. How much fluid volume will the client receive in 8 hr?
Answer 1:
Directions, Microgtt/min = 45 drops
Drop factor = 60 gtt/ml
Total time = 5 hours
First of all we have to calculate how much ml fluid we are infusing per minute,
Formula, 1 minute = Microgtt/min devided by drop factor
1 minute = 45/60 ml.
1 minute = 0.75 ml.
Now we have to calculate fluid infused in 5 hours with the help of 0.75 ml/minute,
Formula, Total fluid infused = Time in minute multiply by infused volume per minute in ml
Total fluid infused = (5×60)×0.75 ml
Total fluid infused = 225 ml.
Answer 2:
Directions, Microgtt/min = 28 drops
Drop factor = 10 gtt/ml
Total time : 8 hours
First of all we have to calculate how much ml fluid we are infusing per minute,
Formula, 1 minute= Microgtt/min devided by drop factor
1 minute = 28/10 ml
1 minute = 2.8 ml
Now we have to calculate fluid infused in 8 hours with the help of 2.8 ml/minute
Formula, Total fluid infused = Time in minute multiply by infused volume per minute in ml
Total fluid infused = (8×60)×2.8 ml
Total fluid infused = 1344 ml.
