What is a safety concern related to diagnostic ultrasound imaging that can be used therapeutically? How would a therapeutic ultrasound system leveraging the phenomena identified be different from a diagnostic system?
when ultra sound is generally considered to be safe with very low risk the risks may increase with unnecessary prolonged exposure to ultrasound energy or when untrained users operate the device, depending on the temperature gradient the effects from ultrasound exposure can include mild heating , coagulative necrosis, tisssue vaporization or all three. Ultrasonic cavitation and gas body activation are closely related mechanisms which depends on the rarefactional pressure amplituede of ultra sound waves.
Therapueutic ultrasound devices may use short bursts ot continous waves to deliver effective ultrasonic energy to tissue , some devices operate at higher amplitude and therefore tend to producce shocked or distorted waves,it is often ussed by physiotherapists to reduce pain increase circulation and increase mobility of soft tissues, Additionally the application of ultrasound can be helpful in the reductiion of inflammation and reducing pain healing of injuries and wouunds.
