Although numerous ancient cultures traded between nearby kingdoms, the Ancient Greeks were few of the first people who believed on an advanced system of international trade and commerce. Ancient Greece was not a empire or single kingdom, however was a collection of main cities that each had its own independent government, known as city-states. The city-states of Ancient Greece first traded among each other. Bet because the soil in Greece is only good for growing a certain kinds of plants, thus the Greeks had to start trading with other cultures with a motive that they could have enough food to support a growing population. The simplest approach to get to those cultures was by sailing across the Mediterranean Sea. They followed it and with passage of time Greeks became excellent sailors and established complex networks of trade with people all across the Mediterranean region as early as the 6th century BC
The Greeks were main importers of wheat, barley, cheese, and pork as Greece did not grow these. Few trade goods were categorised luxury items because a certain culture was especially talented at making them. The Greeks were also main importers of ivory, glass and rugs from the Middle East and Egypt. In return for the items they imported, the Greeks exported the products that they were the best at producing. Thus Greece Culture laid a foundation of international trade as they became involved with an early network of international trade
