A hospital is interested in evaluating inter-rater reliability in nurse assessment of dementia. A random selection of four nurses evaluated six patients (randomly assigned) and recorded a dementia score. The data is available in “Nurse ICC data”. Use a one-way, random-effects model (software of your choice) to find estimates of

  1. the variance components and
  2. the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC)

Note that you won’t be including “patient” in your model. Patient-to-patient variability and nurse*patient interaction will be included in the error (“within”) term.

You are a nurse working in a cardiac unit of the hospital. You are interested in whether blood pressure readings differ depending on the patient’s position. You have collected the systolic blood pressure (SBP) readings for 12 patients in two different positions (supine, standing). The table below provides the results. Assume that SBP differences are approximately normally distributed. Conduct the appropriate test to determine whether SBP differs for the two positions. Assume α=0.05 and show all supporting calculations. Patient SBP...

The nurse completes a physical assessment. When asked what brought her to the hospital, Betheny replies, "things just aren't right" and begins to cry. After further conversation, Betheny describes her mood as "very sad now." She rarely goes out or invites friends to visit. She admits that she feels like strangers are saying bad things about her. Sometimes she hears a man's voice that is a "little bit scary."Betheny's daughter, an only child who is visiting from out of town,...
