ohn Smith is a 64-year-old male. His past medical history includes BPH, HTN, chronic back pain, COPD, seasonal allergies, Erectile dysfunction, and intermittent UTI’s. Mr. Smith has completed school through 8th grade but then ultimately became a laborer until his retirement. His wife accompanies him to meetings with doctors to assist and learn about the medications as well. Mr. Smith is very independent however and does not want to rely on his wife.

Each student will prepare an educational pamphlet on one of the prototype medications from the semester that applies to the scenario and client above. They must use the appropriate health literacy level for a patient/family member. The pamphlet must include:

  • expected action
  • therapeutic uses
  • side effects/adverse effects
  • medication/food interactions
  • any specific details pertinent to that medication

Antidote - activated charcoal

Phenytoin is an anti-epileptic drug, also called an anticonvulsant. Phenytoin works by slowing down impulses in the brain that cause seizures. Phenytoin is used to control seizures. It does not treat all types of seizures.

Side effects - "Headache, nausea, vomiting, constipation, dizziness, feeling of spinning, drowsiness, trouble sleeping, or nervousness may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Phenytoin may cause swelling and bleeding of the gums".

# Valproic acid -

Antidote - L-carnitine and naloxone

side effects :

  • nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea;
  • dizziness, drowsiness, weakness;
  • headache;
  • tremors, problems with walking or coordination;
  • blurred vision, double vision;
  • hair loss; or.
  • changes in appetite, weight gain.

# Diazepam -

Antidote - benzodiazepines

side effects :

  • weak or shallow breathing;
  • severe drowsiness or feeling like you might pass out;
  • depressed mood, thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself;
  • confusion, hallucinations;
  • anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping;
  • hyperactivity, agitation, aggression, hostility.

# Phenobarbital -

Antidote - naloxone

Side effects -

  • dizziness,
  • drowsiness,
  • problems with memory or concentration,
  • excitation,
  • irritability,
  • aggression,
  • confusion (especially in children or older adults);
  • loss of balance or coordination,

# Atropine -

Antidote - physostigmine or pilocarpine.

Side effects -

  • dry mouth,
  • blurred vision,
  • sensitivity to light,
  • lack of sweating,
  • dizziness,
  • nausea,
  • loss of balance,
  • hypersensitivity reactions

# Bethanechol -

Antidote - Atropine Sulfate

Side effects -

increased saliva/urination,

flushing,

headache.
