Ans.

Commodities are objects that have or possess an economic value. North America empire transformed into commodities by long process of extraction, production and exchange of natural resources. The great lakes of north america emerged as primary manufacturing region as bulk of raw material and low grade products were easy to ship over water in large, heavy loads. However during the process of extracting commodities from land , when one commodity was depleted then another commodity was extracted. These land were mineral rich lands containing deposit of mineral ores which was used in industrialization and urbanization. The exchange of these commodities played crucial role in process of urbanization like Chicago. Commodities like timber, iron, coal provided raw material to construct cities. Such commodities trade and exchange transformed people. Humans have promoted efficient exchange of commodities by manipulating natural environment. They have transferred land to promote commerce .
