The Medicare and Medicaid are the main two public service programmes, mostly funded by the government for the benefit of the population of America. The benefits and scope of the programmes differ according to the certain parameters.The services offered by the Medicare is mainly targeted towards the population of 65 years and above, or below 65 years If the person is receiving social security disability benefits. Along with this, the service extends certain disease condition including end-stage renal disease and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease) of any age. The service is often limited to medical care, hospital visits, outpatient visit, medicines, medical equipment etc which is often summarised as part A part B and part C Medicare coverage.

Medicaid service is a joint venture of state and federal government supporting the low-income population, children, pregnant women, people with disability, elderly, taking care of part, or most of the medical expense. It covers hospital stay, medical care, supports long-term hospital care, custodial care, personal care services etc.The programme supports the long-term care for 21 and above eligible people, as well as the home and community-based services.

The eligibility for the services and the terms may vary state to state. Based on October 2017 enrollment report, 68 million people had benefited the Medicaid services. Unlike the Medicaid programme, the Medicare programme limits in supporting long-term hospital coverage and custodial care. It supports the medical condition that may not improve such as stroke, ALS, Alzheimer's disease Multiple Sclerosis, or Parkinson's disease. The Medicare supports hospice care in case of terminal illness, who is having less chance to live more than six months.
