As mentioned, Swatch wants you to create your own unique way of accessorizing through its Swatch watch. Is a watch a way to show who a person is culturally? Does a watch get embedded into a person’s culture? Can a watch create a cultural image?
Watch plays an important role in symbolising a petson. It represents various characteristics such as being a perception of time, symbol of wealth, a fashion statement or a reminder of impending appointments. The perception of time can refer to the business expression saying “time is money” where people see being late means that person does not care about where they are late to. A symbol of wealth can mean that a person flashes their economic success with a luxury brand watch. Using a watch as an accessory is making a watch a fashion statement. A watch tells you the observed attentiveness period of time which may remind you of impending appointments.
According to me watch being embedded into a person’s culture is uncertain because some people wear smart watches.Culture is an accumulation of the beliefs, traditions, language and values of a particular group of people.Cultural symbols can represent any aspect of the culture, including nationalism, belief systems, traditions, language and values. A cultural image should convey some meaning as some cultures have Swastika has cultural image which means positivity. Some cultures have Hamsa as cultural image meaning hand of God. A cultural image should be pious and away from showy and artificial Standards
Watch cannot be used as cultural image . Nowadays it has become symbol of luxury, royalty, high status and fashion statement and according to me all these attributes do not resonate with a meaningful cultural image.
