A bladder scan is also known as a radionuclide cystogram. It is done to see how much the bladder can hold urine during full bladder and whether the person can completely empty the bladder when urinating or not. To visualize better liquid radioactive material is used during the procedure.
Indications
- to find out VUR
- urinary dysfunction
- Complain of incomplete emptying bladder
Procedure
-The test is done in the radiology department by the technician or the doctor.
- No specific preparation is needed
- The person is prepared by lying down on the scanner table in the supine position.
- then a catheter is inserted to remove all the urine by placing the catheter through and into the bladder.
- Insert liquid with radioactive material through the catheter into the bladder. Then the person will feel fullness of bladder, do the scan and see how much the bladder can hold the urine.
- Next the person have to empty the bladder and check that the person can completely able to empty the urine or not through again scanning of the bladder.
