(Hint: buying power of American citizens compared to citizens of other countries, over-valued dollars, freedom of choice of our citizens allowed by our government.)

Solutions

Expert Solution

Trade deficit occurs when a country import becomes larger than export. Present US trade deficit is close to the $ 470 Billion, or US is running huge deficit and which is close to 2.3 % of GDP. Following are possible reasons for US trade deficit:

  • Consumerism : American society is highly consumption oriented society. Thus, huge consumption leads to imports and further, country also consume larger portion of domestic output. Thus, trade deficit crops up.
  • Over valued dollar: Value of dollar is high or it has been overvalued. Many countries such as China have kept their currency artificially low valued. These countries can easily sell their products overseas. Hence, import for US become cheap, so import rises.
  • Further, government does not impose any kind of restrictions on buying habits of people, that also drives society towards the mass consumption.
  • Cost of production in USA is relatively high due to high cost of labor. Thus, US goods can not be sold easily in international market, so it keep the export subdued.

President Trump has taken distinct measures to deal with rising trade deficit and it is likely to come under control in near future.

In recent years, the United States has experienced large increases in oil production due in large part to a new technology, hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”). Fracking involves injecting a mixture of water, sand, and chemicals into rock formations at high pressure to release oil and natural gas. An article in the Wall Street Journalindicates that economies of scale in fracking may be considerably smaller than in conventional oil drilling. If this view is correct, what would the likely consequences be for...

It is sometimes said that a balance of trade deficit between the United States and other nations can be harmful to the economic wellbeing of America. Explain what is the “balance of trade.” What does a “trade deficit” or a “trade surplus” mean? Why do some people say a trade deficit is “bad” and a trade surplus is “good”? Many economists reply to these arguments that, at the end of the day, it does no “harm” for a country to...

4.   Birds of many species retain the same breeding partners over many years, yet migration often occurs separately, and male and female overwintering grounds may be separated by thousands of kilometers. If breeding pairs are established, we might expect an association between the day female partners arrive at a breeding ground and the day male partners arrive. Scientists tried to determine if long-term breeding partners exist in a small population of wood thrush (Hylocichla mustelina) in western Pennsylvania. The researchers...
