what are the two articles "Theoretical approaches of shrinking cities" and "How Capital Shapes Our Cities" about?
The two articles "theoretical approaches of shrinking cities"
and "How Capital shapes Our Cities relates to economic,
sociological and geographical effects of modern day Capitalism,
Globalization and deindustralization.
Both these articles seem to scream loud about the negative
landscape created by the policies of capitalism and Globalisation.
In modern times, where human civilisation is hitting the heights of
growth and development high, there seems to have created a side
situation that could be called as a side effect. Shrinking cities
refers to the phenomenon of loss of population, economic slowdown,
loss of opportunities and consequent abandonment that a place faces
due to reasons such as migration, deindustralization , attraction
towards capital loaded areas etc.
The issue of shrinking cities can be traced back to understanding
how modern capitalism and globalisation has shaped our lives. It
has been a continuous process. Our modern economic system has been
structured and wired in such way that has led to disbalance within
a country regarding economic prosperity, demographic scenario and
concentration etc. It can be safely said here that major chunk of
importance is diverted towards the well being of Global cities
(Take for example : New York city) such that other towns, cities
and areas experience not only outflow of wealth and capital, but
population loss. After a point of time, these places face extreme
incidents of economic downturn and gradual and final
abandonment.
The two articles cited above in one way seems to question the
credibility and responsibility of these modern systems of
capitalism and globalisation towards mankind for whose welfare and
progress they were originally structured.
