Solutions

Expert Solution

1. Using bromine solution, pentene will decolourise the bromine solution because it adds on to the double bond in the structure, and nothing will happen with pentane

                                                  or

You could try Baeyer's test. Put KMnO4 in presence of dil: H2SO4. If the solution is unsaturated (Pentene or pentyne), it should decolourize the blue KMnO4 to white. Otherwise, if it is pentane, or saturated, nothing should happen. This is also known as Unsaturation test.

2.

  • Chain initiation: The chain is initiated (started) by UV light breaking a chlorine molecule into free radicals.

Cl2 → 2Cl

  • Chain propagation reactions: These are the reactions which keep the chain going.

CH4 + Cl→ CH3 + HCl

CH3 + Cl2 → CH3Cl + Cl

  • Chain termination reactions: These are reactions which remove free radicals from the system without replacing them by new ones.

2Cl→ Cl2

CH3 + Cl→ CH3Cl

                                                                 CH3 + CH3→ CH3CH3
