For carbon-14, calculate the mass defect and the binding energy. Please explain to me where you get the numbers from.
For Carbon-14 there are 6 protons & 8 neutrons
So the mass of nucleus containing 6 protons & 8 neutrons is = 6(1.0073) + 8(1.0087)
= 14.1134 amu
But the actual mass of a C-14 atom is 14.0032 amu
So mass defect = 14.1134 - 14.0032 = 0.1102 amu
= 0.1102 x 1.6605 x10-27 kg Since 1 amu = 1.6605 x10-27 kg
= 1.8299 x10-28 kg
Binding energy , E = mc2
Where m = mass defect = 1.8299 x10-28 kg
c = speed of light = 2.9979 x108 m/s
Plug the values we get E = 1.8299 x10-28 kg x (2.9979 x108 m/s)2
= 1.645 x 10-11 J
