Assume your group made a breakthrough in designing square-shaped microprocessors on which square-shaped transistors can be placed. The size of one side your transistor measures 9 mm today. In three year’s time from now, your dream is to make your microprocessor more powerful without changing the microprocessor size, but being able to fit in more transistors. Using Moore’s Law as a guide, what should the size of one side of your transistor be, exactly three years from now, to fulfill your dream? Explain your answer.
PLEASE I NEED THE ANSWER IN 10 MINUTES
The functional form of Moore's Law:
where is the final processing power, is the initial processing power, and y is the number of years needed for the transition.
Therefore, in 3 years,
So the processing power needs to incease by a factor of 2.828
If we consider that the microprocessor of area A fit N transistors
Then we can write:
........(1)
where a is the area of each.
3 years from now, abiding by Moore's law, the same area should be able to fit 2.828 times more transistors.
i.e. ........(2)
where a' is the new area.
Dividing eq 2 by 1
rearranging,
This will be the area of the transistor 3 years from now.
It will have a side length of,
