Rotate the stage slightly such that the incident angle is just below the critical angle. Which color appears first. Why is this? How does the index of refraction depend on the wavelength of light?

Solutions

Expert Solution

When the incident angle is just below the critical angle total internal reflection will not occur. Some of light rays will refract and some of them will reflect back. And the Red colour will appear first because of less deviation of red light. the red colour has larger wavelength so the deviation is less. So it will appear first.

Now, the refractive index depends on wavelength of the light. The refractive index of the medium is just the ratio of the speed of light in vacuum to the speed in that medium. The speed is simply the product of the frequency of the light and the wavelength. Since frequency doesn't change in any medium for a specific light wave, with change in wavelength the speed of light changes. This change in the speed of light causes it to bend, which is simply referred as refraction. Higher the change in wavelength higher will be refraction. Hence the refractive index of the medium is directly dependent on the wavelength.

A beam of white light is incident on the surface of a diamond at an angle ?a.(Figure 1) Since the index of refraction depends on the light's wavelength, the different colors that comprise white light will spread out as they pass through the diamond. The indices of refraction in diamond are nred=2.410 for red light and nblue=2.450 for blue light. The surrounding air has nair=1.000. Note that the angles in the figure are not to scale. A beam of light in air is incident at an angle of 24.0° to the surface of a rectangular block of clear plastic ( n = 1.46). The light beam first passes through the block and re-emerges from the opposite side into air at what angle to the normal to that surface?

You have to build a long cylinder that will be compressed at an angle slightly askew from the long axis of the cylinder. That squeezing force will cause a Z-axis pancake stack (like most of our printed cylinders are) to shear apart at printed layers. What modifications do you suggest to the print of this cylinder that can resist this compression force?
