When considering buildings, it is important to identify the natural frequencies of beams. The implication will be that rotating equipment (e.g. pumps, compressors, washing machines, etc.) are selected so that the natural frequency of the beam is not excited thus brining the entire structure into resonance and causing damage.

A beam will have an infinite number of natural frequencies. The natural frequencies of a beam are the roots of a characteristic equation (which can be obtained using various analytical methods). Consider a beam whose characteristic equation is given by:

cos(0.1012x)cosh(0.1012x)=1

where x is the natural frequency in Hz.

Problem :

Use the Newton-Raphson method to find the natural frequency of the beam near 46 Hz.

Allele frequencies at a wing length locus are measured for a natural population of a migratory cricket species as P(A1) = 0.4 and Q (A2) = 0.6. Describe the four evolutionary mechanisms that alter the frequencies of existing genetic variation in natural populations. You need to define each mechanism and describe at least one example of its action in natural populations (e.g., genetic drift in overhunted populations resulting in less genetic diversity).

Suppose you used allozymes to estimate allele and genotype frequencies in a natural population as we discussed in class. Now suppose there were a number of silent mutations occurring. Can these be detected using allozymes? What influence would the presence of silent mutations have on your estimates of allele and genotype frequencies from allozyme data?
