A manufacturer of bicycles has 4833 wheels, 2315 frames, and 2255 handlebars.
1. How many bicycles can be manufactured using these parts?
2. How many wheels are left over?
3. How many frames are left over?
4.How many handlebars are left over?
This question can be answered by the limiting reagent concept.
A limiting reagent is the one(substance) that is completely consumed during a reaction, and the amout of product formed depends on the limiting reagent only.
A bicycle needs 2 wheels, one frame and one handle bar to be manufactured.
Thus the unit whose quantity is minimum is the limiting agent, which gives us the final number of finished product.
Since a pair of wheels required we cnvert the wheels into pairs.
Pairs of wheels = 4833/2 = 2415.5 pairs
frames = 2315
handlebars = 2255
The number of handlebars is the minimum , hence it decides the number of bicylces formed and it is the one completely consumed.
1) the number of bicycles manufactured = number of handlebars = 2255
2) The number of wheels left over = [(2415- 2255) x2 ] + 1 =321
3)the number of frames left over = 2315 - 2255 = 60
4) The number of handle bars left over = 2255-2255 = 0
