Earthquake Disaster and Nursing Implications

There is a major role for healthcare services providers in disasters like earthquakes. Earthquakes are disastrous and catastrophic event causes damages and losses to the properties and life's of people. From all healthcare providers, nurses role is vital in the earthquake affected areas. Being a nurse it is duty of nurse to step up in the time of crisis. Which our nursing community did their best whenever there a crisis.

At the time of earthquake nurses have to work in community. So their job becomes more complicated and important. They have to work and as well as they have to act as a leader. By division of this complicated work in phases simplifies there job. These.phase are:

Assessment Phase

In the assessment phase nurses can check what they got. Its like preparation phase in this they can check what type of skills, staff, mefications and knowledge is needed. They can check capacity of healthcare providers, safety guidelines, communication between other government staff and non government organizations to make collaboration, so that proper service could be provided to the earthquake affected.

Planning Phase

In planning phase training and demonstrations can be assigned to impart knowledge about services needed mostly. The goal of this training was to promote the emergency health, utilizing health promoting strategies. Integration of soft skills, cold chain maintenance with Lady Health Visitor, workshops on infection and disease control are the major part of the planning.

Implementation Phase

Proper implication of healthcare planning is necessary part. Implementations phase will decide that all your hardworking converted into success or its failed. Evaluation is necessary after implementation. A short evaluation can be conducted by health provider by observations and information basis. Evaluation will give them knowledge if there any point left, then these point can be handled later or it will impart knowledge for future.

Aftermath of a earthquake there are many diseases can be outbreak. This can be due to food shortage, displacement of people, lack of basic health services, damage of utilities, environment changes.

Main disease are which can be outbreak at that particular time after earthquake are mainly vector borne like Malaria, Dengue fever, plague, chikungunia etc. The prevention and reporting of these diseases is necessary for health workers.

Self prevention is the need of time. A healthcare worker should care to other people to eradicate these diseases but also should maintain self prevention protocols for safety of themselves. Should maintain personal hygiene, keep body cover when visit to prone areas, use of PPE kits, Use of sanitizers, check the place suitable for meeting are some points which a healthcare worker maintain while doing his duty.

For community there are many things to do if there any disease like Malaria spreads aftermath of a earthquake then below mentioned points are necessary:

1. Reports to the authority about the disease.

2. Survey for the risk factors.

3. Issue order to the Municipal or Department which involves in sanitization programs.

4. Health education for particular diseases.

5. Proper assessment about the disease.

6. Collection of Malaria slides samples for lab examination.

7 . Health education about prevention methods and self care methods are necessary.
