In the metagenesis of Aurelia and Obelia, what form produces gametes? What form reproduces asexually?
Aurelia and Obelia are two hydrozoan species of the phylum cnidaria. These hydrozoans show a special type of metamorphosis or change in form of their body types from asexual to sexual forms so that sexual reproduction might take place.
Studies have shown that in both, Aurelia and Obelia, the asexual form of life cycle preceeds the sexual form. The life-cycle phases with a swimming larva which is mobile in nature. This larva attaches to a substratum and starts growing over there. These growing bodies are diploid in nature. These growing diploid bodies are called scyphistoma in Aurelia and hydranth in Obelia.
As these bodies reach maximum growth, they detach from the parent body and develop as individual forms independent of each other. These form thenafter grown into haploid forms thus generating gametes. These gametes are randomly selected as male or female and their fusion again generates a larva. Hence, the cycle continues and sexual reproduction takes place these cnidarians.
