Discuss the first three volumes of the ICD-10 manuals and how they are used together to assign the correct diagnostic code. What are the differences between the two manuals?
In order for the MA to code correctly for diabetes, it is imperative to have an understanding of this condition and how it affects the body. Explain the importance of accurate coding for diabetes and use examples with correct codes.
IThe first ICD-10CM is printed in a three -volume set compared with ICD 9 which is a two -volume set..Volume 1 consist oftabular lists containing cause-of death titles and codes and also inclusion and e,xclusion terms for cause -of-death titles.Volume 2 consist of description, guidelines and coding rules.Volume 3 consist of an alphabetical index to diseases and nature of injury, external causes of injury, table of drugs and chemicals.
The maindifference is that ICD10 CM is a three volume set, whereas ICD9 CM ios a two volume set.ICD 1O has alphanumeric categories while the other one has numeric categories.ICD 10 has almost twice as many categories as ICD -9.Some fairly minor changes have been made in the coding rules for mortality.
Studies show that ICD 10 CM diabetes coding classification changes made for diabetes have significantly improved the coding for the disease.Accurate coding for diabetes requires proficiency in many other chapters as well. For Eg category EO8,Diabetes due to underlying condition ,instruct to code first the underlying condition such as pancreatitis. One of the major improvement of ICD10 CM over ICD 9 CM Is that icd 10 cm complement present medical science -separate type 1 and type 2 diabetes category codes and body systems combination codes. It also classifies inadequately controlled, out of control and poorly controlled diabetes melllitus by type with hyperglycemia
