Most people seek intervention when they want the problem to be rectified. For instance: individuals who are only aroused by sadomaschistic acts might have no problems when they and their partners are accepting of their preferences. However, if an individual feels like their preferences are inappropriate and are uncomfortable with how others would react to it, they might consider seeking professional help in order to find ways to rectify their behavior.

Additionally, problems like erectile dysfunction are usually treated with prescription drugs.

However, if problems persist as a result of stressful life events, traumatic experiences, or issues within a couple's relationship, sex therapy is an option that should be considered.
