a. Explain the psychiatric nurse's role in the forensic milieu.
b. What are your fears in dealing with people in correctional facilities?
c. What do you think would be most difficult about working with the forensic client?
d. Have you ever witnessed acting-out behavior in a client? What happened? How did it make you feel? What do you think about this situation now? Were there any clues that this behavior was imminent? Looking at this situation now, could it have been prevented?
(a)ROLE OF PSYCHIATRIC NURSE IN THE FORENSIC MILIEU:- Forensic
psychiatric nurses use their medical training to aid in-
- rehabilitation of criminal offenders,
- assess the well-being of crime victims
- as expert consultants for criminal proceedings.
- legal adviser in law enforcement agency.
(b)FEARS OF FORENSIC PSYCHIATRY NURSE IN DEALING WITH PEOPLE IN
CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES:-
(i)Every day is different for a correctional nurse, nurse’s duties
are at different jails and prisons throughout the country.
(ii) with respect to health care nurse, correctional nurse have to
some acclimation-
-nurses are prohibited from bringing a cell phone into the prison
clinic.
-Equipment available are different than in a hospital.
-Need to maintain boundaries because of the potential for an inmate
to take advantage of a health care provider.
- Nurses can’t hug or touch patients, it might be difficult to show
empathy.
(c)most difficulty for a psychiatry nurse is dealing with a psychic patient.
(d) Dealing with acting out behaviour:-
- Don't take personally.
- Focus on point of medical interest.
- focus on perception and listening.
