Electronic medical records are the need of era, and it is on the 28th year after its invention in the year 1992 which help in flexible access of patient data and a smooth work flow in hospital environment.EHR has both advantage and disdvantage.

The advantage focus on the smooth flow of data related to patient wellness at ease in a short span to the consultant and enable emrgency management of cases in a short span of time.All lab work reports , radiological interpretation , and the constum interface application enables the live records of medical equipments like infusion pump, ventilator etc reach the concerned consultant and it enables the consultant to cross consult with similar cases in the past and how it was managed and to he could come to a conclusion about the medical management of his client very soon.

Secondly the EHR provide with a wide access of reports to the care providers, patients, could be easily passed on to other PHC care and other hospitals .

Thirdly, EHR helps with Research process by providing ample datas on how a particular case was manged medically in the past, to get easy access of number of similar cases treated in the past by linking the EHR with digital library.

The disadvantage of EHR is the ethical dilemma in failing to keep the patient confidentiality as it provides an easy access for a third party other than patient / his family and by consultant.Data breach can occur f informatics are not properly secured by proper passwords.So, its necessary to proivide Hospital staff with adequate knowledge and skills on computer knowledge ,Informatics to prevent errors in work place specially when it comes to confidentiality of patient records.

PLAN OF IMPLEMENTATION

ER and ICU are the places where more records are dealt by nurses and other health workers.So, nurses working in these department has to be well trained in managing the computers and confidentiality of the informatics by continuing education and training on a monthly basis.

1. Initiate with a unique identaification pin for each patient informatics to be managed by the doctor and staff in charge of the patient, so that information access to the third party can be limited without the pin.

2.nurses have to be well aware of the policies of her workplace and security policies available related to the patient information confidentiality.

3. nurses have to stick on to HIPAA rules and regulations

4. Awareness among the health care professionals on : What patient information can be shared, to whom the data can be shared and how it can be shared according to hospital policy.

5.Nurses to be very sure that no data's related to a patient are kept to the reach of public, specially in ER .

6. The nurses to be trained on how to discard a patient information according to his/her work place policy.

Role of MASTERS PREPARED INFORMATICS NURSE

• She/he has to keep close watch on the work force and keep a liason with them
