The vertical displacement y (x,t) of a horizontal string aligned along the x-axis is given by the equation y (x,t) =(5.25 mm) cos [(4.70 m -1) x (14.1 s -1) t]. What are the (a) speed, (b) period, and (c) wavelength of this wave?
We know the equation of a wave which is travelling along x axis is given by
........(1)
Where A is the maximum vartical distance of the string, is the angular frequency of the wave.
Now,
is the wavelength of the wave and is the period of oscillation.
Here the equation of the motion of the string is given by
........(2)
Comparing both equations we find
So wavelength of the wave,
So period of the wave is 0.45 s.
Now,
Speed of the wave is given by,
Ans:
(a) speed of the wave is 3.0 m/s
(b) period of the wave is 0.45 s
(c) wavelength of the wave is 1.34 m.
