EJ is a 28-year-old female. She is being admitted for Gastric Bypass Surgery. She is 5'6'' and 265 pounds. She has a history of Diabetes and hypertension, she is not on medications at the time.

Client Education

Patient education forms the most basic and important here. Topics like discussing about the type of sugery,Pre op preparation, investigations, Post operative recovery stage,Diet modification, Maintaining glucose level , Controlling hypertension ,benefits and complication of the surgery are important topic which has to be reinforced to her.

Diet:

A clear diet plan has to be started weeks before the surgery.Pre operatively a low calorie ,high protein diet has to be followed.No alcohol consumption.

Usually post operative the patient is kept nil by mouth till the surgeons order. Gradually the patient is started with clear liquid diet water,clear broth,diluted fruit juices,sugar free drink.Then after weeks patient are given semi solid diet and solid diet. There are high chances of dehydration so continious sips of water is adviced.

Complication

  • Intestinal obstruction
  • Dumping sundrome
  • Hernias
  • Stomach perforations
  • Ulcers
  • Malnutrion
  • Dehydration
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Acid reflux
  • extreme weight loss rarely weight gain
  • Infection

Dumping syndrome

This syndrome may occur after this surgery. It is als called as rapid bowel emptying. The food empties into duodenum too rapidly from stomach.

Some intervention to be done are

  • eat small and frequent feeds
  • Lie down after eating
  • Do not have liquids along with solid foods
  • Very rarely docor use anti diarrhoeal drug like octreotide
