Review the CMS.gov 30-Day Mortality and Readmission Data website. Review at least two local hospitals and see how they compare to state and national benchmarks. How and why may a consumer or a health care professional use this data to make decision about their next hospitalization? Will reporting this data have an impact on hospitals bottom line in addition to financial penalties from CMS? Give at least two examples of how this data may be used and what type of impact if may have if at all on the hospitals.
30-DAY MORTALITY AND READMISSION DATA: shows the death rates of patients died within 30 days of being hospitalized for a specific condition and also provides information of hospital care that affects patient outcomes which includes prevention and response to complications, enhances patient safety and the deadlines of patient treatment care. HOW AND WHY MAY A CONSUMER OR A HEALTH PROFESSIONAL USE THIS DATA TO MAKE A DECISION: The 30-day mortality and readmission rate helps the consumers or other health professionals to encourage the improvement in the quality of care and reduce the unnecessary expenses and reimbursement to the costumers. REVIEWS ON HOSPITAL CARE: Reviews of hospital care on readmission and death rates are measured within 30 days after a longer time period have less to do with the care in the hospital and more to do with other complicating illnesses, patient's own behavior or care provided to patient's after hospital discharge. REPORTING THIS DATA HAVE IMPACT ON HOSPITALS TO FINANCIAL PENALTIES: Reporting this information on customers or on other health professionals helps to reduce the wasting of money on admission and also encourage the other professionals to improve their quality of care. EXAMPLES ON HOW THIS DATA MAY BE USED AND WHAT TYPE OF IMPACT HAVE ON THE HOSPITALS: 1. The readmission rate for patients with COPD, HEART ATTACK, HEART FAILURE, PNEUMONIA AND STROKE a) reveals the rates of unplanned readmission focus on whether patients who were discharged from a hospital were hospital again within 30 days b) The patient readmission may give information about patients may have been readmitted back to the same or different hospital. c) it also gives information about patient readmission to the hospital related to their recent hospitalization or for an entirely different reason. 2. READMISSION RATE FOR CABG SURGERY PATIENTS: this rate has great impact on unplanned readmission after surgery to show whether a hospital is doing its best to prevent complications, provide discharge care instructions to patients and help the patients to make a clear discharge plan to their home.
