Thirty similar single-family household will be given the electronic device. After one year, the energy consumption of each household will be compared to the energy consumption the year before. If consumption is generally less for 30 households, the we would like to conclude that the device works as intended

A. Why would this be a bad study for determining wheather or not the electronic device helps reduce energy consumptions?

B. Describe a good designed experiment that you could use to answer the question. You will have 30 similar single-family households at your disposal. You study must take one year to complete

Solutions

Expert Solution

(A)

This would be a bad study for determining whether or not the electronic device helps reduce energy consumption because electronic device is not the only factor that helps to reduce energy consumption. There are other factors are: control of the equipment which consume considerable energy: Shutting down of computers when not in use, using LED bulbs instead of ordinary bulbs, turning off lights when not required, unplugging the appliances when they are not in use, using appliances with a good energy rating etc. In the given experimentation, it is not explicitly stated that the above mentioned other factors that helps to reduce energy consumption.are kept constant so that they do not affect the desired result of determining whether or not the electronic device helps reduce energy consumption

(B)

A good designed experiment that you could use to answer the question: whether or not the electronic device helps reduce energy consumption is as follows:

Thirty similar single-family household will be given the electronic device. After one year, the energy consumption of each household will be compared to the energy consumption the year before. If consumption is generally less for 30 households, the we would like to conclude that the device works as intended. The condition for the experimentation is: Throughout the period of this study, the above mentioned other factors that helps to reduce energy consumption.are kept constant so that they do not affect the desired result of determining whether or not the electronic device helps reduce energy consumption

Researchers gave a family planning survey was given to the head(s) of household in a local community. In particular, one question asked the head(s) of households to indicate if they think the community has a great need, some need, or no need of family planning counseling. In addition, they were asked to indicate how many children are in the household. Researchers want to know if the number of children in the household is impacted by family planning counseling. In a single (unvaccinated) family one winter, the 12-year-old and 4-year-old came down with chickenpox. The mother and father had experienced the disease as children and were unaffected this time. The 3-month-old baby did not become ill, either. However, 4 months later the baby exhibited a shingles outbreak. Using immunological phenomena, explain what was likely going on with the baby.

A particle accelerator is a device designed to create high-energy particles for collision experiments. In one such accelerator, protons that are initially at rest are accelerated through a net electrical potential ? to a total relativistic energy ? = 6.5 GeV. The accelerator itself is a large circular ring with a radius ? = 1.1 km. For these protons, calculate the following: (a) The net accelerating potential, ?. (b) Their momentum, in MeV/c. (c) The time it would take them...

Suppose that the average U.S. household uses 13600 kWh (kilowatt-hours) of energy in a year. If the average rate of energy consumed by the house was instead diverted to lift a 2350 kg car 11.3 m into the air, how long would it take? Using the same rate of energy consumption, how long would it take to lift a loaded 747, with a mass of 4.10 × 105 kg, to a cruising altitude of 9.67 km?

3. All else being equal, one would expect the energy consumption to be related to the amount of CO2 emissions. The energy consumption of buildings per unit area per unit time is measured as energy use intensity given in MJ/ft2/year. The CO2 emissions are measured in metric tons per capita per year (T/person/year). The data on the building energy consumption and CO2 emissions values for a sample of 15 zip-codes is shown in the table below           a.    Find the...
