A baseball is hit with a horizontal speed of 16 m/s and a vertical speed of 12 m/s upward. What are these speeds 4 s later?

horizontal speedm/s
vertical speedm/s

Solutions

Expert Solution

Part A.

Initial horizontal speed = 16 m/sec

Since there is no acceleration in horizontal direction, So horizontal velocity remains constant, So

after 4 sec,

Vx = V0x = 16 m/sec

Part B.

Initial Vertical speed = 12 m/sec

In vertical direction there is acceleration due to gravity in downward direction, So a = -g = -9.81 m/sec^2

Using 1st kinematic equation:

V1y = V0y + a*t

V1y = 12 + (-9.81)*4

V1y = -27.24 m/sec
