(1) Acculturation is a complex concept that affects health behaviour among all immigrants ,Acculturation occurs when a an individual migrates to a new country and goes through a process of adapting to the host country . The process can result in the several challenges and changes that can strongly impact the immigrant's health positively or adversely . A significant aspects of the acculturation process is the adaptation of the dietary practices of the host country also called dietary acculturation .
In dietary acculturation , immigrants may find new ways to use traditional food , exclude other food and or consume new food . There are estimated 3.7 million Filipinos in teh U.S making them the third largest Asian subgroup . Filipinos are also the 4th largest immigrant group with .8 million born outside of the U.S . Like all other immigrants , Filipinos American experiences acculturation changes . There are the only few things that effects of acculturation on health behaviour among FIlipinos American Immigrants . The increased the prevelance of hypertension among Filipinos Americans has been told that the migration and the length of residency in the U.S have been found to have significant correlation with hypertension among Filipinos immigrants . Dietary changes among Filipinos immigrants include the addition of milk , increased consumption of meat , fruits and fresh vegetables (salads ) , less starchy foods and snacks as an increased in caloric intake with twice as a many calories from protein and three times as many from fat . Other dietary changes includes increased meat , diary , bread , fat , and sugar intake.
(2) The food and culture of the philippines are largely influenced by spanish , chinese , and American tradition , White rice is the main food in the diet and it usually served 3 times per day . fish is the primary source in the diet .
Vinegar , soy , sauce and fermented fish are traditionally flavorings used in Filipinos cuisine . Filipinos use home remedies and herbal medicine first , These may include drinking boiled for a sore throat and boiling corn hair in water and drinking it to promote urintaion . A hilot , is a traditional practitioners sought for the pain relief and offers treatment along the lines of chiropractice and massage . Filipinos will seek the advice or a traditional healer or family elder prior to that of a physician and usually only seek a doctor when teh illness has advanced and home remedies have failed.
(3) They emphasis on culture in our genetic counseling training recognizes its crucial role in molding an individual's conceptualization of health as well as other life aspects . especially since the Filipinos culture is a mixture of indigenous as well as imported and blorrowed elements . As part of this the endeavor , there are seven common Filipinos cultural belief ;- namaligno , namamana, lihi , gaba , sumpa , pasma , kaloob ng diyos.
Culture is defined as the totality of socially transmitted pattern of thoughts , values , meaning and belief. it is not limited to any specific ethnic group , geographical area , language , religious belief , manner of clothing ,sexual orientation and the socioeconomic status . In revisting usog , pasma and kulam , culture is incribed in our bodies and in our minds as such as the reltionship of culture and health is important to understand a sit impact an individual 's worldwide and the decision making process. like in the other fields y of medicine , the impact of cultural beliefs is increasingly being recognized as an essential component in the genetic counseling process.
(4) Filipinos are fond of non- verbal communication . They use hand gestures , pursing of lips, raising of eyebrows and their eyes to communicate . They are less dependent on spoken words .They have sharp intuitive sense called pakiramdam for what is impied and not stated Ever their smile has the various meaning
When responding to a request or a favour , Filipinos generally struggle with saying- no for fear of hurting other people's feeling .
(5) The national survey persistent malnutrion problems suchas protein energy malnutrition and micronutrients deficencies ( anemia , Vitamin A deficiency , and iodine deficiency disorders ) , continue to afflict a major proportion of Filipinos . In philippines , nutrion education and promotes date back as early as 1900 with the conduct of educational campaigns directed toward the prevention and control of epidemic disease and to care and feeding of young infants . The philippines Government , nutritional status of children , the philippine plan of Action for nutrition , then devotes substantial attention to nutrition program for school children and examine other potential legislative actions that may have an impact on the community and industry . while various nutrition education initiatives addressing malnutrition problems among Filipinos , that resulted in an improvement in some of the conditions much is still to be done to achieve zero malnutrition for the philippines . Eliminating hunger and malnutrition is technically feasible . The challenge lies in generating the requisite political will , developing realistic policies and taking concerted actions nationally and internationally.
