Question

In: Chemistry

boiling point elevation of a solution containing 2.94 g sodium chloride and 114 g water

boiling point elevation of a solution containing 2.94 g sodium chloride and 114 g water

Solutions

Expert Solution

NaCl , i value = 2

mass of NaCl = 2.94 g

molar mass of NaCl = 58.5

moles of NaCl = mass / molar mass

                       = 2.94 / 58.5

                       = 0.0503

mass of water = 114 g = 0.114 kg

molality = moles / mass of solvent

              = 0.0503 / 0.114

              = 0.441 m

Kb of water = 0.512 oC / m

water boiling point To = 100 oC

Tb = i x Kb x m

        = 2 x 0.512 x 0.441

         = 0.451 oC

boiling point elevation = 0.451 oC

this means water boiling point increases from 100 oC to 100.451 oC
