Solutions

Expert Solution

Before Solving the above table, let us first understand each of the terms:

Quarterly money growth rates: An increase in the amount of money in the economy, in this case it will be an increase from one quarter to another.

Money Growth = Real GDP Growth + Inflation

where, we know GDP Deflator = (Nominal GDP/Real GDP)*100

hence Real GDP = (Nominal GDP)/ GDP Deflator)*100

So we can say from the chart provided: Real GDP = (Nominal GDP)/ GDP implicit price deflator)*100

and, Inflation Rate = (New GDP implicit price deflator  − Old GDP implicit price deflator) /Old GDP implicit price deflator × 100

Inflation rates: The GDP deflator measures price inflation by dividing the nominal GDP by the real GDP, and then multiplying that figure by 100. The result is a measure of an economy's inflation or deflation.

Hence in through the above chart we will determine GDP deflator numbers by following formula:

nflation Rate = (New GDP implicit price deflator  − Old GDP implicit price deflator) /Old GDP implicit price deflator × 100

Velocity growth rates: How fast money changes hands per unit of time is called the velocity of money.

Nominal GDP = Quantity of Money × Velocity of Money

hence, Velcoity of Money = Nominal GDP / Quantity of Money

In economics, broad money or M3 is a measure of the money supply that includes more than just physical money such as currency and coins. It generally includes demand deposits at commercial banks, and any monies held in easily accessible accounts and hence we will use M3 in the above chart as Quantity of Money

So we can say from the chart provided: Velcoity of Money = Nominal GDP / M3

Real GDP growth rates : Real GDP measures economic growth, in relation to gross domestic product (GDP), from one period to another, adjusted for inflation or deflation

As we know GDP Deflator = (Nominal GDP/Real GDP)*100

hence Real GDP = (Nominal GDP)/ GDP Deflator)*100

So we can say from the chart provided: Real GDP = (Nominal GDP)/ GDP implicit price deflator)*100

The table below contains the following variables, growth rates of real GDP, M1, M2, velocity of M1 and M2 (denoted V1 and V2), the federal funds rate (FFR), and the CPI inflation rate. Use the quantity equation to calculate the equilibrium inflation rate using individually M1 and M2. Next, calculate the equilibrium inflation rate assuming the quantity theory of money holds (i.e. assuming velocity is constant). According to your calculations, which is a better predictor of inflation, M1 or M2?...

Part 2: Transforming data and computing descriptive statistics Create a quarterly real GDP series by dividing nominal GDP by the GDP deflator. Also, create a money velocity series as PY/M where P is the price level, Y is real GDP, and M is the M3 money supply measure. a. Plot the velocity of money (produce a graph similar to Figure 8.2 on page 212 of the textbook). Has velocity risen or fallen over the sample period? b. What is the...

In Country A, assume that the velocity of money is constant. Real GDP grows by 7 percent per year, the money stock grows at 15 percent per year, and the nominal interest rate is 10 percent. What is the real interest rate? Show your work.

Velocity. a) The money supply is $600. The price level is 2 and Real GDP is 900. What is velocity? b) The money supply grows 3%, velocity is growing 1%, real output is growing 2%. What is the inflation rate? Suppose that people are worried that future inflation will be very high, so that people don’t want to hold onto money since it will lose value, which makes velocity grow at a rate of 10%. If the money supply continues...
