Why is diagnosis of fusariosis difficult?

Disseminated fusariosis,is present only in host that are immunocompromised , hosts with a hematologic malignant diseases who have fungemia, skin lesions, and multiple organ involvement. Fungemia is detected in 50% to 60% of patients with a diagnosis of disseminated infection, and Fusarium is the only mold commonly associated with fungemia.Skin lesions are macular or papular, often with a necrotic center, and they occur predominantly on extremities and are characteristic of this infection.

when there is no microbial growth , identifying fusariosis from other hyalohyphomycoses is hard, so it need the use of in situ hybridization in paraffin-embedded tissue specimens. the genus Fusarium can be identified by the developmemt of hyaline, curved, multicellular macroconidia with a foot cell, species identification is difficult and may require molecular methods.
