She has an excisional biopsy of the lesion, and the pathology report comes back as squamous cell skin cancer. How would you discuss the risk factors for developing skin cancer with the patient? What prevention strategies would you use to help her reduce the risk of additional skin cancer? Search online for at least one piece of educational material on the early detection of skin cancer. Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common skin cancer in whites. It is the tumour of the epidermal keratinocytes and rarely occurs in dark skinned people.

RISK FACTORS FOR SKIN CANCER

1) The cause of Skin cancer is well known. Prolonged or intermittent , repeated exposure to Ultra violet radiations from the sun.

2) Parts of Body Unprotected by clothing and in people who have recieved considerable exposure to sunlight .

3) Some people are at much greater risk than others. People with red blonde or light brown hair with light complexions are most susceptible.

4) History of sun burn.

5) Family history of skin cancer.

6) Large number of moles on body .

7) Maximum exposure to the sun.

PREVENTION OF SKIN CANCER.

1) Avoiding the all above mentioned risk factors.

2) Wear clothing that covers maximum body area.

3) Avoid direct sunlight and stay in shade.

4) Use Sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or more.

5) Look for new moles or lesions and evaluate them for danger signs of cancer.

6) Follow a Healthy lifestyle which includes Exercise, proper rest and sleep, and a healthy diet.
