Consider the osteon and the arrangement of the concentric circles.
The osteon is the fundamental functional unit of much compact bone. Osteons are rough cylindrical structures.
Each osteon consists of concentric layers of compact bone tissue that surround a central canal (haversian canal). The haversian canal contains the bone's blood supplies. Each haversian canal is surrounded by 5-20 of concentrically arranged lamellae of bone matrix. Osteons are connected to each other and the periosteum by oblique channels called Volkmann's canals or perforating canals.
Osteon | Similarities | Differences |
Compact bone |
1. Age 2. Disease resistance. 3. Blood supply |
1. Made up of osteons. 2. Also called as cortical bones. 3. Dont have spaces between lamellae. 4. Have bone marrow cavity. 5. Have high amount of calcium. 6. Cylindrical in shape. 7. Harder. 8. Found in inner surface of bones |
Spongy bone |
1. Age 2. Disease Resistance. 3. Blood supply. |
1. Made up of trabeculae. 2. Also called as cancellous bones. 3. Consists spaces between lamellae. 4. Does not have bone marrow cavity. 5. Low amount of calcium. 6. Cuboidal in shape. 7. Softer. 8. Found in outer surfecs of bones. |
