Due to increased rate of industrialization, developing nations around the world are using the energy at a unprecedented rate and therefore this current era is called as Fossil Fuel Age.

The increase in population does not help. According to the prediction of U.S Energy Information Administration , there will be an increase of almost 56% in the current world energy consumption between 2010 and 2040.

At present, human being are utilizing almost 17.7 Terawatt of power which is produced from every source such as oil, coal, gas and various other alternative energy sources such as wind, solar, hydropower and so on. 17.7 Terawatts is a big number. To give you an idea, 1 Terawatt can power 10 billion, 100 watt bulbs at the same time!

According to U.S. Energy Information Administration, the current consumption of energy worldwide is almost 543 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu), and in it USA's chare is of about 97 quadrillion Btu, equal to 18% of world total primary energy consumption.
