A system is a part of the world that we want to study. A chemical reaction is an example of chemical system. In physical chemistry, for example, macroscopic, atomic or other phenomena can be studied for chemical systems. This study involves laws and concepts of physics. A kinetic experiment is another example of chemical system. Another example is to study the transfer of heat between a chemical system and its surroundings during change of phase or chemical reaction taking place. These kinds of experiments belong to thermochemistry.

Chemical systems under study can be of several types. You can have open systems, which can exchange both energy and matter with the surroundings, for example an open reaction flask. A closed system only exchanges energy with the surroundings and you have a total control of the amount of matter. And you can study an isolated system for which there is no exchange of energy or matter with the surroundings. You need an isolation chamber for those experiments.
