Hematopoiesis is the process of formation of mature blood cells like red blood cells, white blood cells, neutrophils, etc.

There are existing three theories explaining the process of hematopoiesis.

• Monophyletic theory/Unitary theory
• Polyphyletic theory
• Dualistic theory

The most accepted theory is the monophyletic theory proposed by A.A.Maksimow. According to this theory, only a single type of stem cell is involved in giving rise to all the blood cellular components. These stem cells are pluripotent.

Pluripotent stem cells can differentiate into every type of tissue cells but they can't form an entire organism. They can differentiate into all types of myeloid cells like RBCs, WBCs.

The above diagram helps us to know how this single pluripotent stem cell differentiates into the blood cell.The following next image shows us the process of erythropoiesis and how it originates from stem cells.
