My culture is of a Christian community and the culture that I would like to study more is Islamic culture as I had been working in one of the Islamic country. As per my observation, the cultural differences from my culture is huge. Christians believed in miraculous healing whereas Islamic teaching believes healing through medications. In Islamic culture, the women donot have as much freedom as in our culture. The Islamic patients often request the patients to be treated by same gender whereas gender of the physician is not an issue among Christians. The treatment choices are different and may change according to their cultural practices. For example: Isalmic patient may refuse medication during fasting or hours of prayer.
Both the culture possessed great similarities but the dissimilarities are also high. The history shows various beliefs regarding presence of One God and the disease to be a punishment for the sin. The Islamic culture believes in simplicity in all aspect especially the way of dressing, eating and communicating with others. With their external appearance one can never identify a economically rich or poor person. The quench for education is also high as the have a competitive spirit and want to make advancements through modern technology. But the education for women is limited among some group of Islams. The Islamic country believes in establishing strong control over the nations who are non-islamic. Therefore they have politically raised standards. The topographical arrangements of this area is also very systematic.
The various interdisciplinary interventions of this culture which may help in disease prevention and promotion of health include no alcohol or drug abuse, strict laws for marriage and assualts, health services free of cost to all its native people, spiritual and psychological support during grief and bereavement.
In case of childbearing, the children are considered to be God'gift. Abortion is prohibited among Islam. The contraceptive methods are also not frequently used by these culture. The culture follows abstinence as the contraception method. The Islamic believe in expression of grief to remain dignified, prohibiting loud wailing, beating chest, shreiking, tearing of hairs or clothes that make Muslim lose faith. Bereavement represents a significant life event often resulting in social, psychological, and spiritual transition. Dead among muslims is considered to be a new beginning rather than a end. They find comfort in prayers and a faith to re-unite with the dead person in paradise.
