What are examples of lab tests that can be done to determine the function of the kidneys and why is it important in a hospital setting.
Dear Student,
I have discussed below some of the most important kidney function tests and their importance :
* Serum Creatinine test: It is a blood test and an increase in the amount of serum Creatinine in blood warns of progressing kidney disease.
* Glomerular Filtration Rate : This is a blood test and a lower level of GFR suggests that kidneys are not working properly and in severe cases may need dialysis or kidney transplant.
*Blood Urea Nitrogen : As its level rises, the functioning of the kidney decreases.
*Urinalysis : This test is used to detect any disorders in the kidneys and the urinary tract, infections, kidney stones, etc
*Proteinuria, Microalbuminuria : If the tests are positive, it suggests high risk for developing kidney disease.
*Creatinine clearance : For knowing the effective functioning of kidneys
Some other tests include Imaging tests like Ultrasound ,CT scan, etc and in some cases Kidney Biopsy is recommended for accurate diagnosis.
Hope this helps...
