Why do some scientists argue for an ‘intentional’ influence on environmental use?
Intentional influence on environmental use can be defined as a set of studies which is controlled in its methodologies by the scientists. These experiments are deliberately exposes chemicals to human population to study the relation between how agents (for example certain chemicals) affect human health, which deepens the understanding between environmental exposure and diseases. Scientists control the amount of agent that is exposed, the length of exposure and the medium via which it is induced in human subjects (food, air etc). They monitor the bodily signs and symptoms via examination of subject's urine, blood sample etc, to study the effects of exposed chemicals on human health. A study conducted under this category was done by University of California at San Francisco (Ratto et al 2006).The scientist exposed fifteen biologically healthy subjects to ozone at 0.2ppm in two different trail groups. While one group was exposed for 4 hours of ozone in one day, the group was exposed to 4 hours of ozone in 4 consecutive days. Scientist took their blood and urine sample to study the effects of environment agent on human health. They found the neutrophils (white blood cells which is associated with inflammation) was higher in the group of subjects that were exposed to ozone for four consecutive days. The pulmonary function deteriorated in these subjects. Studies like this gives an insight abput how exposure of ozone effects human health , which can further lead to development of interventions for diagnosing, treating and preventing outbreak of certain diseases. (Trull et al 2002).
Critics often argue that these intentional influence on environmental use is unethical and should be discontinued, as these involve controlled administration of chemicals on human population, which itself is dangerous. For example, toxic effects of pesticides on human health can be known through different medium of research methodology, rather than intentionally administering pesticides on humans, which is catastrophic. Although these experiments are empirically similar to phase one clinical trails of various pharmaceutical drugs, these researches are not studied to create medical intervention or therapies. It only studies the cause and effect between different harmful chemicals in the environment and its effects on human health. Therefore, the intentional influence on environmental use are set of studies that can use different medium to study the correlation between environment and health, rather than using human population and causing irreversible health damage to them.
