Take a roll of toilet paper and without breaking it, put one end in the toilet and leave the rest outside the toilet. Then come back in a few hours and observe.

What happened? and more importantly why did it happen? What property of water did we just observe and why is it important to life? (think really tall trees!)

Next, what property of water did we observe with the belly flop video and why does this property allow certain organisms to walk on water?

Finally, take a basin of water outside, scoop some in your hands and toss it up in the air. Then observe what happens. What property of water are we observing? and why is it important to life?

Toilet paper is, in a manner of speaking, kind of like a rope. And on occasion ropes will break. Your task for this station is to make several measurements and determine the relationship between the length of a rope and the tension required to break it. Record the methods you use in your experimentation, all the work involved in making this determination, and discuss your results. Think about it: Fishing line is generally sold in spools, and varying thicknesses are...

A grocery store is trying to predict how many packages of toilet paper rolls will be purchased over the next week. They know from their records that each customer has a 60% chance of buying 0 packages, a 30% chance of buying 1 package, an 8% chance of buying 2, and a 2% chance of buying 25. They expect about 150 customers per day. (a) What is the expected number of packages sold in one day? (b) What is the...

A study is run to estimate the average number of toilet paper rolls a typical U.S. household currently have. Say a sample of 10 households is selected last month and they reported the number of toilet paper (in rolls) as follows.                        75         56        50        94        65       111      97        88            103        98 Assume the average amount of toilet paper a household usually have is 55 rolls at national level. Test whether the mean number of toilet paper rolls in this sample is significantly different from the national level? Use...

Suppose the market for toilet paper is perfectly competitive. The long run equilibrium is characterized by the price being $2 per roll with 20 firms making toilet paper, each selling 5 million rolls per week for a total of 100 million rolls being sold each week. A pandemic then breaks out, where people are afraid that the world will run out of toilet paper. a) what happens in the short run to: -1) The price of a roll of toilet...

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there is the sense that essentials like toilet paper is desperately needed. Use demand and supply analysis to explain what should happen in the market. Suppose stores don’t want the backlash of increasing the prices due to the higher demand. . What do we expect to happen? [Discuss how changes in demand will affect prices. Then show how a shortage develops using the idea that prices are not changing with the equilibrium.   This is NOT a...

A company TFA has a monopoly on toilet paper production. It offers its product in three different sizes: a small (S) package which contains 4 rolls, a medium (M) package which contains 8 rolls, and a large (L) package which contains 12 rolls. There are two types of consumers in the market: type A consumers and type B consumers. The willingness-to-pay (WTP) for each type of toilet paper package for each type of consumer is detailed in the table below...

The radius of the roll of paper shown in the figure is 7.6 cm and its moment of inertia is I = 2.9 × 10-3 kg·m2. A force of 2.9 N is exerted on the end of the roll for 1.1 s, but the paper does not tear so it begins to unroll. A constant friction torque of 0.11 m·N is exerted on the roll which gradually brings it to a stop. Assume that the paper's thickness is negligible. (a)...

Sorbent has developed a new machine to manufacture toilet paper, which they expect they can use for a period of 9 years. However, it will cost them $8.75 million. What is the minimum annual cash flow they could accept in order to cover the costs of this machine? Sorbent have determined that a discount rate of 5.5% p.a. compounded annually is appropriate for this project.
