Why is culture and health literacy important?
Cultural and family influences shape attitudes and beliefs and therefore influence health knowledge. The social determinants of health are well documented in terms of the conditions under which the individual has little or no control, but which affect their ability to fully participate in a health-literate society.
A solid understanding of health enables individuals to make informed decisions about their health and the health of their family, to be active participants in their care, and to develop their skills and confidence to effectively manage health systems. Health care also effectively supports their political leaders and policy makers.
