How to utilize Levinson's theory in the nursing field?
Levinson’s theory focused on adult development. It is made up of
number of stages and transitional periods. In this theory there are
four primary eras and five transitional periods. The four primary
eras are:
• Preadulthood: From conception to 22 years of age that is from
high dependence to high independence.
• Early adulthood: The individual has high energy and abundance and
also stress. They pursue life passions, career goals and start
family.
• Middle adulthood: Individuals have low capabilities but are
energetic. They become responsible for their family.
• Late adulthood: The individual reflects on their life and
accomplishments.
The transitional periods are:
• Early adulthood transition: Individuals finds their place in the
adult world and modifies relationships with family.
• Midlife transition: Individuals have a question on what they have
accomplished. If they are unhappy they go into midlife
crisis.
• Late adulthood transition: They give up career to retire. They
feel a loss in identity when they come out of their career and
retire.
