Explain the role of sodium acetate in the preparation of beta-D-glucopyranose pentaacetate. What does it do?
Acetylation of all free –OH groups will form ester; by heating the monosaccharide with acetic anhydride in the presence of a catalyst such as anhydrous CH3COONa or ZnCl2, or by treating the sugar with acetic anhydride in a pyridine solution.
In the presence of sodium acetate gives the β -pentaacetate, whereas with a zinc chloride catalyst the α form is produced.
Thus sodium acetate produce β –pentaacetate form
